Drag Queens As An Inspiration

I’m pretty obsessed with Drag Queens and a huge fan of RuPaul’s Drag Race for so many reasons. It smashes gender norms completely and is so fierce and sassy that I can’t handle it half the time – but lately I’ve realised there’s more to my love of drag queens than just how salty the queens get.

I realised that what it is that truly inspires me about drag queens is the message that they give. The queens on RuPaul’s Drag Race tend to have faced adversity and come out on top and to me, they highlight how important it is to never give up on your dreams, no matter how many times you feel like they’re stupid or you’ll never achieve them – because you don’t now when you will. Alaska taught me that if you want something bad enough, you should keep trying and eventually you’ll get there, while Latrice Royale taught me body positivity no matter what your size.

But most of all, my favourite thing about drag queens is that they taught me that being different is fabulous rather than something to hide and shy away from. They taught me to embrace my uniqueness, to celebrate it in fact and that standing out from the crowd means that sometimes you can do amazing things instead of being a weirdo or a freak (thank you Katya for always showing me that.)

Drag queens for me are more than just guys in costumes pretending to be women on stage. They’re more than fishy, salty bitches, they’re something to look up to and admire because, for me, they highlight that being a bit different really can be wonderful and that being sassy is something that you’ll never regret.
